Monferrato is now the most prized touristic destination.

Langhe loses the podium

If until a few years ago a wealthy foreigner eager to buy a home in Italy would point his attentions almost exclusively to Tuscany and Sardinia, this is no longer the case. In the ranking of the most popular destinations for wealthy foreigners, Piedmont has made great strides, and today we are one of the most sought-after destinations in the Belpaese. In the past four years, it is estimated that housing requests from across the border have grown by as much as 82 percent. This is what emerges from a survey conducted on portals specializing in buying and selling for foreign clients, eager to set up home in our parts or simply make an investment.

From the U.S. to Australia

Analyzing in more detail the data provided by the specialized agencies, the first curiosity that is noted is that the applications come from literally all over the world. However, our landscapes, our cuisine, and our Sabaudian culture especially appeal to Americans. In 2024 alone, questions “made in the U.S.” accounted for almost one in four (24 percent), while 11.2 percent of searches came from the United Kingdom. They were followed in this ranking by Germany with 8.7 percent, the Netherlands with 6.8 percent, and France, with 6.4 percent. However, the French deserve a separate discussion: the transalpine cousins are in fact the ones that have recorded the highest growth since 2023, marking a +30%. Similar percentage growth was also recorded by the Swedes and Australians. In short, Piedmont is increasingly known and sought after even on the other side of the world.

The house? Bigger is better!

But which house do real estate investors with non-Italian passports dream of?Data from specialized search sites indicate the detached villa as the most sought-after type, followed by the country cottage. And of course, large houses are increasingly sought after, preferably with a garden and ample land around it.

A final curious aspect, however, is related to the question: how did foreigners who have fallen in love to such an extent that they are looking for a house discover our territory? “Usually,” agree the referents of the specialized sites, ”interest arises after discovering Piedmont during a vacation. Considering that tourist arrivals from abroad are constantly increasing, everything suggests, therefore, that the demand for houses, villas and cottages will also experience further surges in the near future...”
